We begin this month’s Horizons with a sad farewell to a very good friend of SEMPRIS.
Mary O’Rourke was a leading KC who took silk in 2009 and became a notable name in defending medical malpractice claims, handling several high profile cases during her time. She also had a reputation within the world of sports having been involved in a number of high profile cases.
Prior to taking silk, Mary was part of the legal team involved in the West Bromwich Albion FC vs. El-Safty case, acting for Mr El-Safty. This was the very case that instigated the Defence Organisations restricting/amending coverage for doctors working within professional sport – with SEMPRIS eventually being created in response.
Mary acted for the doctor caught up in the Bloodgate scandal within Rugby, where the doctor received a warning from the GMC rather than being struck-off the register.
Since then, Mary assisted SEMPRIS on numerous occasions as a speaker at various meetings and conferences to doctors and surgeons around the unique risks within professional sport and medicine. Mary successfully defended a number of SEMPRIS Insureds at trial and was part of Dr Eva Carneiro’s legal team during her lawsuit against Chelsea FC & Jose Mourinho.
Mary was held in great esteem and was someone whom Neil sought advice from on numerous occasions. All of us at SEMPRIS are feeling her loss, and we’re sure you’ll join us in sending condolences to her family.
